[Warren Miller is coming!] Both Timberline and Mt. Batchelor are closed for the season. Both anticipate opening in November, but will open sooner if there is adequite snow. The last weekend for Timberline was Labor Day, and I imagine Batchelor was the same. Reliable rumor had it that the snow on Timberline held out better than the snow at Batchelor. The people down at Tek in Redmond may know more, however. I for one, am going to Europe. See you all there. Pray for Snow. Jeff Mizener Tektronix Portables ADG Beaverton OR tekadg!jm@tek

Now is the time for the *REAL* skiers to come out! I was at Timberline last
weekend, and there were at least a dozen skiers on the Palmer Snowfield. (A
good Nordic ski pack with ski pockets on the side is indispensible.) Snow was
in abundance! I think the reason they close Timberline after labor day is
lack of interest, not lack of snow. Even without lifts, the Palmer Snowfield
is only about 2 moderate miles from parking. My dad and I hiked up in about
an hour -- it would have been much quicker on cross-country skis. Much of the
recent four-inch snowfall was still on top of the 4' - 5' base.
