Nov. 11: Sunday [A recon for things to come] Weather: Strong winds from W, new snow in last 24 hrs and more snow predicted in another 24 hours. Snow was heavy and wet. Density in excess of .6. Air termparture: surprisingly warm once out of the wind. Sorry, no specific readings. Took out the cross-country skis at Echo Summit and Carson summit (better snow). In both locations, about 24 inches of snow with exposed rocks. Snow station at Emerald Bay had 1 foot marker covered. Snow distribution patchy, no base. Waxing: varying from hard blue stick to sticky green klister [if you can believe that] in some places. Downhill resorts: passed by Sierra Summit(?) (All low lifts and one high lift) and Kirkwood. (All but the highest 3 lifts operating). We heard Rose, Alpine Meadows and North Star are open with limited skiing. Some exposed rocks present on the kirkwood slopes. Again, no real base yet. I wouldn't take out the good boards for another two weeks. Driving conditions: icy, slicky, we pulled two other cars out of the snow in a period of 15 minutes. All were going too fast, get the xxxxxxxx off the road. --eugene miya NASA Ames Res. Ctr. {hplabs,ihnp4,dual,hao,vortex}!ames!aurora!eugene emiya@ames-vmsb.ARPA
