[net.rec.ski] Does XC exist on the net?

			...and a small voice from the back of the
			   room said, "Hey, are there any cross-
			   country skiers out there?"

And if there are, do the lift-serviced folk mind sharing this space
with us, or should we go the way of "net.rec.ski.xc"...

I would like to stimulate discussion on technical details, such as
waxing, technique, etc., and not just have another "I just got back
from Crested Butte and it was great" sort of thing.

I second the vote for net.rec.ski.xc. I'd love to discuss Cross Country
Skiing on the net (that's the only reason that I read net.rec.ski).

Another reason to form a new newsgroup is that many of us are not very
interested in snow conditions in other areas (I don't travel very far to
Cross Country ski - why bother?).

Uh, I would prefer that the XC people stay in net.rec.ski for two reasons:

	1) There is barely enough traffic in net.rec.ski for anything,
		so you would not be stomped on by the alpine types

	2) for those of us alpine types who are interested...

Would have been skiing today, if I wasn't sick...

I vote against a separate news group for X-C.

Not only is there not enough traffic to warrent this, but I know that
both Alpine and Nordic skiers would learn from one another. In the end,
the principles for nordic skiing are no different that downhill skiing.

On thing I have learned thru the years is that most Nordic skiers really
don't know how to ski.  They try to snowplow on unpacked slopes [impossible];
they stay in tracks (grooves) when going down a hill into the inevitable tree;
they think telemarking is hard (it's not, I teach it as the first turn,
correction third after a simple step turn and a kick turn). The guy who
taught me how to X-C ski didn't know himself at the time (he's a world
class hang glider pilot now). I had to relearn to ski myself in Utah
where the hills are steep.

For now, I long to just see general discussion on the topic. As far as
visiting distant places: I forward ski condition reports to friends at the
IBM Research Lab in San Jose. I use some of the reports myself to visit
areas. I highly appreciate your time an effort to post conditions.
