[net.rec.ski] Snow report Tahoe area weekend of Dec. 29

eugene@ames.UUCP (01/02/85)

12/29 -- Kirkwood area. Lows in lower teens. Clear turning to clouds.
Day time highs in 40s. No significant wind. No new snow. X-C blue
stick. Downhill lift lines up 15 minutes (probably for the holiday
weekends). Snow pack is about 2-3 feet with about a 6 inch dry layer
[calling it powder would insult the state of Utah]. Heavy traffic on the
highway. Road conditions fairly dry. Skied the main meadow (teaching a
beginner), some downhill runs, and
then later a tour up and around Carson Pass. Not much wind crust, surprising
to me. Spent the night at Grover Hot Springs.

12/30 -- Mt Rose Area, NE Tahoe. High winds in the early morning. Evening
was in the lower twenties and dry. Wind crust and some surface hoar
developing in the Mt Rose Ridge area. Too many snowmobiles in this area
[my first time]. Highs in the 40s, clear, and very windy. Few trees
and ridges exposed make for harder snow. Purple stick today. Oh, the
summit has a relay station and what do I see at 10,150 feet by an old
Bell symbol. Skied to Pt. 10,327? and descended.

12/31 -- McKinney Creek Area, W shore Tahoe near Homewood. Had trouble
finding this X-C trail head. Temps into low teens again. Clear and
windless. Wind developing thru the morning with a fast building cloud desk
to the East. Blue stick for glider and a 6 inch purple kicker would be
enough in this area. About a two foot base (can see this at the streams
where the pack is exposed). Signs of snowmobiles, but none around.
Want to try to ski into the Ludlow hut some weekend. Homewood area is a
bit deceiptive, and it appears worth a days downhill skiing.

Will probably not go skiing the first weekend in January due to a lack on new
snow. What's there is not bad. I just want new snow.
