Some comments on the current tips vs. protection, etc debate...
I carry *my* skis inside my aerodynamically (sp?) shaped camper shell on
my Toyota 4x4 truck !! (Great for avoiding the use of chains, too..)
But seriously, if you aren't blessed with the above mentioned rig, I think
you should look into the various streamlined, *enclosed* roof carriers now
available for cars. The best of both worlds - low drag, with ultimate
protection (no snow or dirt, and lockable as well). I have no idea how much
they cost, but it is bound to be cheaper than having skis stolen ...
