Summer Skiing Tired of the summer ? Need a weekend away from the surf ? Go skiing ! Just returned from a Fourth of July ski trip to Mammoth, well worth the trip. There are several lifts open and a vertical drop of 2000 ft., the snow is good and not icy or slushy all day long. This miracle is achieved by snow cats constantly running up and down the slopes spraying some sort of chemical which 'freezes' the snow during the day and prevents it from freezing at night. The temperature was in the high sixties and many were skiing in just swimming gear - take the sun lotion. If you want to catch some sun (any) don't put on the #15 too early, that stuff really works. I covered up with it and skied for 4 hrs in shorts then rode 300 miles on my motorcycle in a T shirt and shorts and didn't know I had been in the sun ! Mammoth expects to be open for two more weekends and possibly into August - suggest you call first though. Still lots of snow ( >10 ft. in places ) but roads are all clear and mostly dry. Don't know if Alpine or Kirkwood will be open any more but understand that the snow there is very slushy by 11 am as they cannot spray. Does anybody know what they spray with, it's only referred to as 'salt' up there but it's not likely to be NaCl judging from its effect on the snow - could be KCl which would cool the snow as it dissolves and lower the freezing point for the night effect, but that would be pretty expensive and lift tickets were only $14. Can anyone recommend a good place to ski this summer, sometime between May and June? Glacier skiing in Europe sounds attractive; I was at Stubai in Tyrol last winter and was told they have good skiing year round, but I'd like to find out about larger glaciers elsewhere in Europe, or year-round skiing in Canada. Thanks. - Chris

What about Portillo, Chile ? Has anyone out there skiied it? Down there, the seasons are reversed. It would be interesting to hear about it. It would likely be cheap, too, given the exchange rate for the dollar.

How about one of the southern hemisphere resorts? Chile or Peru seem the
nearest (and I've seen camps advertised in Skiing magazine), but they
ski in Australia, too.

Sunshine Village near Banff, Alberta regularly stays open until the end of May (sometimes mid-June). The reason that is often given for closing at those times is that there aren't enough people coming out to the hill to justify staying open. The conditions in the Canadian Rockies are supposed to be very good this year. I'm going out April 18'th for a week and will let you know first hand when I get back.

REFERENCES: <1028@hound.UUCP> The dollar may be strong against the peso in Chile, but that doesn't help you much with airfare which is outrageous. My fiance is from Chile and from what I've heard from his family and friends, getting to Chile will cost you an arm and a leg, but once you get there, you won't believe how cheap it is. Portillo is listed as one of the ten great ski resorts in the world. I've never been there, but I'm sure I'll get there before long, to ski and visit the other half of the family. > Where should I go summer skiing, say in May or June?
In May or June, Arapahoe Basin (near Denver) should still be open.
That's still spring skiing! As for summer, Chile sounds like it
has the best skiing, but also (especially this year) the best
warfare. A New Zealander told me that between New Zealand and
Australia, Australia has bigger ski resorts but New Zealand has
better skiing. He said August is the prime month but also crowded
with students. June and July are stormy; September is his
preference (similar to US spring skiing). Anyone have data to
verify or contradict any of this info? Sound tempting...

> Can anyone recommend a good place to ski this summer, sometime between May > and June? Well, if you go to the Portland Usenix meeting in June you can ski Mt. Hood. I skied from the summit after walking up in the moonlight on my birthday several years ago. It was the day after a Pascal Standards committee meeting in Portland. We should probably make a skiing contingent [U*nix]. You'll get lots of letters from Tek and Intel on this I bet. You have to be real careful skiing on glaciers, especially late season. This is when crevices open up (May on). In 1979, I was skiing, un roped with four glaciologists when I fell into a crevice. Fortunately, the angle was such that one ski fell in and the other was downhill. I swore the crevice was 30 feet deep. Next day, I skied by, it was only 15 feet deep! [shrunk a lot that night! :-)] The Mt Hood ski area has the advantage that it is a permanent snow field rather than a glacier. Also, the US ski team trains here. You may ask, why ski unroped-- none of us expected crevices, it was mid winter. You should have seen the expression on my friends' faces: knowing this was their livelihood. Canada does not really have much glacier ski except the heliski services like CMH. Again, use care. Europe: try around Zermatt, I hear. --eugene miya NASA Ames Research Center {hplabs,ihnp4,dual,hao,vortex}!ames!aurora!eugene emiya@ames-vmsb.ARPA

>Can anyone recommend a good place to ski this summer, sometime between May >and June? To my knowledge, the only USA summer ski *resorts* are here in Oregon. Mt. Bachelor is about 4 hrs drive from Portland and is the area's most popular destination resort. Mt. Hood is ~1 hour from Portland and has a faithful day-use crowd all summer. Both areas close after Labor Day (September!) due to lack of interest, not snow. See the latest issue of Nordic World for an article on summer skiing, with about a full page devoted to Oregon. Other summer skiing in USA (don't know about Canada) is hike-up or hire a helicopter. Mammoth Mountain, California, in the Eastern Sierras, consistently stays open until the 4th of July each year. Two years ago, with tremendous snowfall, they were able to stay open until August 6! Mammoth claims to be the "Corn Snow Capital of the World", for its unique type of snow that arrives each Spring (snow surface melts during the day and freezes at night, forming pellets than resemble corn kernals). Spring and early summer skiing at Mammoth is very popular as they have sunny days, a decent base, and lots of tanned bodies! Enjoy... ----- Bruce Kovalsky ..!trwrb!trwspp!spp2!kovalsky "How do you make a small fortune in the stock market?" "Start with a large fortune."
