Utah's got great outdoor recreation, and inexpensive housing, minutes from campus-- we also have lots of Unix machines needing support and development. To fit in all that recreating, work hours can be very flexible, and the bucks aren't bad (25k - 40k), particularly considering housing costs. As the salary range demonstrates we'll consider hackers with a range of experience. We're the Computer Science Dept at the University of Utah and we need another Unix wizard to help support and enhance a gaggle of machines running Berkeley Unix. These include several Vaxen ranging from 750's to a 785 (and an 8600 soon), a dual processor Gould 9080 (speed 7 times a 780), a handful of Suns, and an SGI workstation (Sys V). Hanging off some of these machines are lots of fancy graphics devices, and some signal processing devices and robots. We use most of the machines for research in computer aided geometric design, computer graphics, VLSI design, asynchronous computation, portable AI support systems (read Lisp), digital signal processing, robotics, and CAI development. Only a 780 is used primarily for instruction. We'd prefer someone with kernel experience at least at the driver level and someone familiar with Berkeley Unix, but will consider others. Duties would include general system maintenance and support as well as local software development. In dealing with our various nets such as the Arpa Internet, ethernet, a broadband local net, Applebus, and possibly the X.25 world, networking projects are numerous and needed. You'd probably be the person with primary responsibility for the Gould, fastest machine on campus, and just installed last week. Part-time grad student status may be possible. In addition to the Unix machines, we have a DEC-20 on both the Arpanet and Telenet networks, a ring of two dozen Apollo nodes, about a dozen HP Lisp workstations, and a bunch of Mac's. The university is a member of the Apple University [Mac] Consortium and the "West Coast" NSF Supercomputer consortium, and is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. We're in Salt Lake City on the western slope of the Wasatch mountains, which provide outstanding winter and summer recreation, including fantastic downhill and cross-country skiing within 30 minutes of the University. Housing is reasonably priced and plentiful within minutes of campus. Although much of Utah is spectacular desert the state is by no means "dry," despite rumors to the contrary. Oh yes, Salt Lake is also a great place for kids. Contact Jay Lepreau: lepreau@utah-cs.arpa, {seismo,decvax,ihnp4}!utah-cs!lepreau 801-582-7214, 581-4285
