[net.rec.ski] Wanted -- Info on Areas near Salt Lake City

root@azure.UUCP (azure) (10/27/85)

I'll be skiing in the Salt Lake City area for the first time Dec 31 - Jan 5,
and would like some information on where to stay, where to ski, where to eat,
and so on.

I've seen the "Utah Ski" booklet, and talked with several people about
Alta, Brighton, Solitude, etc.

My main interests are XC or "off-the-trail" downhill skiing, REASONABLY
priced lodging, and REASONABLY priced food. Nothing fancy required.

Anybody know of such places, especially near the ski areas?

Thanks.

Martha,

I used to live in Logan, Ut. about 90 miles NE of SLC. We did a lot of
back country x-country skiing (ie. telemarks) in Logan Canyon. Snow is
nearly as deep as near SLC and just as fine powder on the right days!!
Logan Canyon also has much less danger of avalanche. Just take US 89
north from Logan (actually starts out heading east) to get to the general
area. For specific spots to ski, ask at TrailHead Sports on Main St.
If you're really into telemarks ask about the "Temple Peak" trail. As
for lodging there are a couple BestWesterns in town, one with indoor pool
and whirlpool. Its been a few years since I've been there so I can't
recommend too many eating establishments, but the "Factory" on Main St.
used to serve good pizza and beer. Good luck, you'll love it.

PS - as for downhill, Alta was my favorite and the best deal for your money.

I can also highly recommend XC skiing in the Uintas area. Only about an
hour east of SLC, and relatively "undiscovered". There are several
trailheads on the road east out of Kamas. I don't like to XC ski in the
"ski" canyons in SLC, the trails are too steep for my enjoyment.
