From an aborted trip around Crater lake: Scattered snow showers (surprise) and 20 MPH winds. Base was 3 feet of icy hard packed snow with patches of new (wet) snow up to 4 inches deep. Snow level was 5,000 feet. Chains required. Wax was purple stick but the Swix thermometer said Blue: it doesn't take humidity into account. Visibilty was poor (200 yards at best) with the exception of the sun occasionally popping thru. The road to the rim was not open until noon. Avalanche danger was low. Day temps: 20s to 40s. Partner not moving fast enough, so we bailed out. Back some day to try again. Good conditions to circumnavigate. S Tahoe region, before the current storm: 1-2 feet old icy snow. Some snow felt during the early evening hours and places 1/4 inch new dry snow at 7,000 feet. Wax was purple stick again. Day temps from upper 20s to 50. High thin cloudiness with with an occasional snowy cloud. Visibility was good otherwise. The amount of snow is rather surprising in light of the rain. The snow level is about 5,500 feet in the N exposures. The new storm's snow level is supposed to be 7,000. Bailed out early this time due to equipment problems with partner's gear.
