It is snowing heavily. I stay in Norden, Ca. right near Sugar Bowl, which is about 12 miles straight as the crow flies from Squaw. Since Fri at 8pm, until I came home Sunday night I would say 8 feet of snow had fallen, and they were predicting another 6 feet on Monday. And all this snow fell continously. The San Franciso Bay Area is experiencing it worst winter storm since before the drought in 1974-5. There have been reports of up to 8 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. With loads of flooding, and mud slides. All this moisture is being reflected in Tahoe with the most snow dropped in 24 hours since the 1983 New Years storm which was then hailed as the worst winter snow in 30 years. Most of the locals around Norden took there cars down to Sugar Bowl which has a small covered garage, and dug in. How does all of this reflect on the ski resorts? Well there is a fair amount of wind, so on Saturday Squaw was closed on the top, all of Alpine expect the bottom was closed. At Soda, we opened and then closed due to visablility and conditions. Although we were opened all day on Sunday. Sugar on the bottom was opened. Donner had one chair. NorthStar opened. Incline opened on the bottom. The Mt. Rose highway I heard was closed due to white out, so Rose and Slide were probably closed. In general the biggest problem they had outside of the weather was all the snow couldn't be removed fast enough, and the roads were fairly bad for people w/o 4-wheel drive. The snow is typical Sierra Cement, though somewhat dry during parts of the day. It is very heavy and very slow. The biggest problem outside of getting around, and survival is the wind. Many of the resorts are build such that they close with heavy gusts. Rose is one of the few that really stays open in some intense stuff. I have skiied there with 60mph gusts. pretty radical stuff. The conditions at Tahoe right now are terrible. It's been raining to 7500 feet or higher for two days. Today's high was supposed to be over 50. Besides the *serious* flooding and similar hazards, there is a large avalache danger. I heard that Alpine Meadows was being evacuated (unconfirmed). -- Ed Gould mt Xinu, 2910 Seventh St., Berkeley, CA 94710 USA {ucbvax, decvax}!mtxinu!ed +1 415 644 0146 "A man of quality is not threatened by a woman of equality."
