[net.music] Superstars & Charity & some other unrelated stuff

lo@harvard.ARPA (Bert S.F. Lo) (04/12/85)

I forgot who it was that started to complain about "USA for Africa" but when
that posting first came up, I sort of agreed with it. Now I've sort of changed
my mind.

I think it's agreed that there is nothing wrong with charity itself. It's the
"My God, I'm so charitable" attitude that really sucks. So what to do? Why not
find some charity organization that's working to help the hungry in Ethiopia
and other countries and send the money you would've spent on the single/12"/LP
to them? I suspect a lesser portion of that money would be wasted since these
organizations do not have to pay for promotion, vinyl pressing, decorative
sleeves etc.

I think most consumers mean well when they go out and buy the music. However,
I also think they might try to better understand what it is that they are
supporting. How many really know the causes of the famine and the current
condition? If more of us did, maybe things wouldn't have gotten as bad as they
have now. It's so sad that so many died before we were forced by Band Aid and
USA for Africa to recognize it. But such is America.

The music stuff:

Does anyone care to review Joan Armatrading's "Secret Secrets"? How about the
music from "Chess" (other than "One Night in Bangkok")? Or Alison Moyet's
"Alf"? Also, does anyone know what's going on with ABC? I've heard of a third
album coming out. Is Dead or Alive working on an album since "You Spin Me Round
(Like A Record)" hit #1? Any recommendations on new UK music (don't tell me
about the Smiths' "Meat is Murder")?
