Please, send me no more lectures (or flames) about how `c' really ought to be
an int rather than a char, and how the value of an assignment expression is
the value assigned to the lefthand side.  To my amazement, several people
have (incorrectly) concluded from my previous posting on the subject that I
am ignorant of these matters.  I guess paging through all those dumb
discussions [e.g. return e; vs return(e);] tends to put the brain to sleep,
or worse.
