[net.lang.c] mod.std.c

osd7@homxa.UUCP (Orlando Sotomayor-Diaz) (10/16/84)

This is a request for comments on the idea of maintaining a
moderated group to be called mod.std.c. I have offered myself to
moderate such group, to be dedicated exclusively to the discussion
of the ANSI standard C under consideration right now by a committee.

First, let me point out that I'm not a member of such committee and
that I would moderate the group on a unofficial basis. This
would be part of (what I consider) an USENET experiment on moderated
groups. The creation of mod.std.c will not bring about the
elimation of net.lang.c.

The advantages of such a group are several:

1. More organized discussion. (Could bring in very interested readers.)
2. Better reading material in form of digests, for example.
A digest could be dedicated to one aspect of the standard,
    with all submissions ordered.
3. Avoid duplication of material. ( For example, I would not re-post from
net.lang.c unless you also mail me your article for posting
    in mod.std.c.)
4. Raise the level of technical discussions, by disencouraging
personal attacks or indiscriminating flames. (This is not
a big problem right now, but I would filter out such attacks,
    recommending alternative groups for posting.)

Some disadvantages could be:

1. Longer time to see your ideas posted. The moderator would be the
only one allowed to post to this group.
2. Forgetting how to mail to me. (Now matter how hard we try...)

So, what do you think? PLEASE REPLY TO ME, NOT TO THE NET, AND
I'LL GET BACK TO NET.LANG.C IN TWO WEEKS.

I'm at AT&T Bell Laboratories (NJ), if your gateway can talk to
any of AT&T's sites (ihnp4, houxm, akgua, mhuxd, harpo, etc., etc...)
you should be able to talk to my system.
