[net.music] Speaking of jazz violinists: Stephane Grappelli

riddle@ut-sally.UUCP (Prentiss Riddle) (04/12/85)

As I dig through the jazz bins, I keep thinking about picking up a Stephane
Grappelli album, but never do because there are so many to choose from. Not
only has the man had an extremely long recording career, but he's had a
flurry of pairings in recent years with all sorts of other musicians: old
jazz musicians, new jazz musicians, bluegrass musicians, classical musicians,
even one Indian musician...

Anybody have a favorite Stephane Grappelli album you'd like to talk about?
Or perhaps a discography?

There's a new Grappelli album called "Conversations" (I think that's
the name).
This is an album recorded with the great Indian violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam.
Subramaniam happens to be L. Shankar's brother. Subramaniam has been
given the title in India which, translated to English, means "Emperor
amongst violinists". In my personal opinion, I've always felt that
Shankar was the more inspiring musician. Subramaniam is quite awesome
technically ("Vrindavan" with Larry Coryell and Stu Goldberg and
"Garland" with European violinist Svend Asmussen).

I've only heard a couple of tracks off of "Conversations" and it seems
real good. What I heard was a Jazz-Indian-Rock mix.

I've got an album by Grappelli, Coryell, Philip Catherine, and
N.H.O.P. (the bassist, don't make me spell his name), that's on
Pausa Records. It has lots of great songs that were originally done
by Grappelli and Django Reinhart way back when. I don't remember
the name of the album, but if anyone's really interested I could get it.

The LP is called YOUNG DJANGO, released in 1979. NHOP is the Danish
bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen.

Another intersting Stephane Grappelli record is PARIS ENCOUNTER with Gary
Burton. It goes without saying that *anything* Grappelli recorded with
Django in the 30s is worth picking up.

Although I don't have a favorite album by S.G., I have seen him live
twice and was amazed by his piano playing ability. I would suggest
picking an album where he plays piano too.
