I just got some information from a usually reliable source
that Atari is redoing the design of their 5200 joystick controllers.
Apparently they have had complaints about the old design going
bad before it should. I myself have encountered this. My problem
was that the fire buttons would stop working for short periods
during a game. Another common complaint was the rubber ring around
the joystick tearing. The new design should fix these problems.
Also, the new design will feature a self-centering joystick.
The new joystick should be out about the same time as the TrakBall
controller. They say that should be around May-June (which translates
into sometime around the end of July).
I saw an ad on TV for a game that they said is "just around
the corner" for the 5200. (Ready for christmas?) It was called
"Pole Position" and it looked very good. We'll see. I'm still
waiting for "Vanguard".
