[net.games.video] Thayer's Quest

bobr@zeus.UUCP (Robert Reed) (10/28/84)

I discovered a new video game at my local parlor this weekend called
"Thayer's Quest". It is the most sophisticated video game I've seen yet,
and marks a new direction in coin-op video. It is essentially an analog of
the Adventure game that we all have grown up with, but it incorporates video
disk and audio output technology into a unit. There is actually and
instruction manual that goes with the game. Quoting from it:

"Thayer's Quest" creates a realm of fantasy and adventure where
survival and success depend more on your decisions than your
    reflexes.

YOU control apprentice wizard Thayer Alconred in his quest
against an evil sorcerer. Choose the course of action Thayer
takes by pressing the number key which matches your choice.
Each option leads to a different outcome. Depending on your
choices, each play differs from the last.

You will have time to make your choice, but some situations
require quick thinking. If you wait too long, you can miss
    your chance.

There is a collection of magical items that you need to find and wield at the
appropriate places. Many of the teenagers standing around the machine would
get bored and walk away (this game is no "Stargate"), but I found the game
fascinating. What was particularly amazing was that in the prolog, you are
given a chance to enter your name by spelling it, and the game responds by
pronouncing it! It had no trouble with my name (Robert), or someone else's
fictitious name (Duin). I am very curious about the sophistication of just
this small element of the game.

Has anyone seen this game?

I have also seen Thayer's Quest and have dumped something around ten
dollars in it so far. The game requires one quarter for three units of time.
One unit is roughly a half minute of play time. As you advance further in the
game and collect magic items or make certain discoveries you gain one unit of
extra time for each such discovery/collection. However, you must pay attention
to the picture. When getting the black mace, for example, it is in the corner
away from the obvious places in the screen. You must then press the "Black Mace"
button to get it.
To get clues as to how one must advance, one must listen to the tales
told my various people. This is crucial to success.
The game has many problems. For example, when getting the black mace one
must enter the crystal castle (after dealing away with the familiars). Then the
closed door should go to the room of knowledge, but often will lead outside
which will cost you extra time getting back in again. Even worse, when reaching
knowledge and taking the door to the treasure room (with the mace) I have been
put outside in a place where it is impossible to get back in again unless I kill
myself and start over again.
The game is in three phases. The unit here has only the first so once
accomplish the first mission that is it and you cannot finish the other two
(which I believe can exist all at once in the same machine). You only kill the
black magician in the first phase. Not Sorcible the bad-guy ringleader.
Does anyone out there know how to get the scepter. This is crucial to
getting the bow to get the orb to get the coins to get the tapestry. Any help
would be appreciated.

I would like to update this. In the crystal castle as anywhere else
it is important to choose fast. Always.
Items are visible in the screen but you must know what to look for.
Also, some items such as the crystal cannot be taken by pressing the crystal
button. For these other measures must be taken such as, for the crystal, using
the spell of release.
Once again, anyone knowing the whereabouts of the scepter, please post
them to the net or mail me.

I just finshed playing Thayer's Quest for the first time today I got the
first two relics(the Black Mace and the Hunter's Horn) and just missed
the third(the Orb). These are the only ones available on the machine
I played the rest of the disc's have not yet arrived.

To get the sceptre go to the isles(after getting the black mace) and go to
the oasis. Then go to the saltflats and use either the crystal or the cold fire
to escape and choice the Hills(someth

Does anyone know how to get the scepter in Thayer's Quest. I know it has
something to do with the temple of Cibar but I cannot find it there. I have
often been told to go to the lost mines for help but I cannot find them.
Following the monk does not gain much information either. Also, on the map
that comes with the instructions, it shows "Druce's Chambers". How do I get
there? Send me hints or spoilers and/or post them to the net. Thanks.

A while back someone was posting info about Thayer's Quest.
The game is not available here in NJ yet, but when it gets here
I would love to have a headstart in beating it. I guess the
reason posts stopped was because nobody responded to the poster --
Well, I am interested in any news about this new game.

                       Some Hints to Thayer's Quest

                               Weigard Hints
Take the staff from the Driads. Use the Cold Fire on the
marsh wastes to destroy the snow creatures. Use the Spell of
Release on the Crystal. Pocket another Cold Fire for future use.
Use the Spell of Seeing on the clearing to see the Fairies, then
give them the Staff. The Fairies will then show you the Crystal
Castle. Use the Crystal to kill the Familiars (Cat Creatures).
When you enter the Crystal Castle, choose the Closed door, then
choose the Wooden Door, to get the Black Mace.

The objects you should have before leaving Weigard are:

          The Black Mace
          The Cold Fire
          The Crystal of Lothar
          The Spell of Understanding

                                Illes Hints

When you enter Illes for the first time, the only safe way
to go is to go to the Oasis (The Amazon's Camp). Do not take the
Long Bow from them, if you do, the Amazon's will stone you. When
you reach where the Fire, Rock, and Water creatures attack you,
first use the Cold Fire. You will be come injured which is
nessarry. After you have killed the creatures, choose the Hills,
that will bring you to the temple of Cibar. Priests will be
walking to you. They will be holding the Talisman Sceptre. To
take it, press the Sceptre key on the keyboard. After you have
taken the Sceptre, there will only be two ways out. Choose the
Catacombs. Then to get out of the Catacombs and onto land,
choose the Tunnel. That will bring you near the Building on the
Cliff. The correct procedure on how to get the Chalice back to
the Clowd Keep will be discussed later. Use the Talisman Sceptre
on the Dunespeople to have them let you pass. After the end of
the screen, choose Follow Dunespeople. The screen will then
shift to a person holding the Onyx Seal, press the button on the
keyboard with that item to take it. Thayer will then say, "I am
overwelmed with your gift." The person will then say, "Please
stay for our feast, ruler of Illes."
If you accidentally meet up with the Fire, Rock, and Water
creatures again, use the crystal of Lothar. That will
     permanently kill them.

                                ISCAR HINTS

When you first enter Iscar, you will see something sparkle
in a box. Those are the Pentacle Coins. Do not take them until
you have the Orb of Quoid. If you are trying to get the Golden
Chalice, here's how to get it:

When you enter Iscar, choose the Coast. You will end up at
Eadwine's Hut. Choose the Black Keep. You will end up near the
enterence to the Black Keep, now choose Coast again. Now you will
end up at the Sea Pavillion and some people will come toward,
with the Chalice. To take the Chalice, press the button on the
keyboard that shows the picture of the Chalice on it. Now choose
Down The Coast.. You will now be transported to a screen that
shows a fork in a road with a sign. Theyer will then say, "What
does this sign say...To Illes." Choose Illes and you will
transported to the screen that shows the Building on the Cliff.
Go to the Building on the Cliff and return the Chalice to the
person in the Clowd keep. He will then give you the hunting
horn, and give you two places to go, Wiigard and Iscar

Do not go into the enterence of the Black Keep unless you
have the Hunting Horn. If you have the Hunting Horn, enter it.
Two green lizard monstors will come toward you. Press the button
that shows the Hunting Horn on it and they will go away. Enter
the Keep interence and it will show some information about the
Crystal of Lothar. Choose the Front Room and it will show the
Blood Room. To take it, press the button that shows the Blood
Sword on it. Then exit the keep. You will then be shown where
the two lizard monstors are again. Press the button of the
Hunting Horn and they will go away. Now enter the Front
Enterence and you will be inside. When the screen finishes
choose the Magic Door. You will the be transported to Torlac's
Palace. Do not enter the palace, unless you have the Pentacle
     Coins.
When you enter Iscar, the screen will show Coast and Other
Ruins. If you choose Other Ruins, after the screen finishes, it
     will show three directions,

RUINS- Goes back to the Enterence of Iscar
FOREST- Goes back to the Hedgemaze
MOUNTAINS- Goes to the Bridge to Far Reaches

If you have the Long Bow, go to the Hedgemaze. When you
enter the Hedgemaze, use the Long Bow to make a Golden Path that
you can follow to the Orb of Quoid. When you see the Orb, press
the button that has the picture of the Orb. Wse the Orb when you
are at the enterence to Iscar, to take the Pentacle Coins. To
take the Pentacle Coins, use the Orb of Quoid.

When you have the Pentacle Coins, go to Torlac's Palace,
enter the Palace, and when the person at the Throne tells his
guards to take you to the Dungeon, press the Pentacle Coins
button. The personon the throne will then show you a Secret
Passage. Take the Passage and you will be at the Elder King's
Last Battlefield with the Silver Wheat. Use the Blood Sword to
     harvest the Wheat.
Then go to the Bridge to Far Reaches, and give the Silver
Wheat to the person guarding it. He will then let you pass.

If you select the Far Reaches, you must have the Onyx Seal.
It will show you the Dunespeople again. After the screen is over,
select the Rocky Path. The screen will then shift to the EVIL-
NASTY PERSON and you must use the Black Mace. If you use the
Black Mace, it will show you deflecting his fireball that is
comming toward you and hit the other guy. He will then turn into
a green ugly monstor and dissappear. Then it will show a message
congradulating you on completing the first three kingdoms and
will start you back at the start of the game.
