The S-1 project at Lawrence Livermore Labs has developed a high-quality compiler for a Pascal superset called "Pastel". The compiler runs under 4.2bsd Vax Unix and produces code that runs 2-3 times faster than code produced by "pc", and compiles faster as well. The Pastel superset removes most of Pascal's arbitrary restrictions, and supports separate compilation, parameterized types, flexible arrays and sets, strings, complex data, conditional compilation, record and array constructors, bit manipulation, exception handling, and 64-bit arithmetic. This compiler has been in use locally for 2 years and is fairly well debugged. It has been used for operating systems work, as well as compiling vanilla Pascal programs like TeX. We are interested in finding out whether there is any outside interest in this compiler. If you're interested in being a test site, please send a letter to the following address stating your level of interest and intended use. Chris Ghinazzi Lawrence Livermore Labs P.O.
