Telex has been around for a long time, and now I see that Western Union is advertising that you can send and receive Telex messages from your word processor. Presumably this means you could also build a Unix-to-Telex mail forwarder. There are over 1.5 million Telex subscribers in the world. Has anyone thought of doing this? I think the problems would be more political than technical (who pays?).

The Telex messages are sent as electronic mail which appear in user twxop's mailbox and then a background process does the appropriate munging in order to send them out over the auto-dialer to the Telex service.
