Usually something "found" in  a spool directory is found because of some
exceptional condition, like a D. file with no corresponding C. file.
Unfortunately, the transport software is not foolproof and bugfree, so
it is necessary to do this sort of "snooping" at times, just to make
sure things still work.  I occasionally get messages forwarded by the
admin on our neighbor machine because they got wedged in the spool dir.

If you're sending messages over insecure channels which are so private they
need to be encrypted, maybe you should think about using a different
transport medium.
