[net.mail] Debugging duplicated messages

gnu@sun.UUCP (06/09/83)

Here at Sun we seem to be getting a lot of duplicated mail lately.
Some of it is being generated here (we are trying to find out why)
but much of it comes in from other places.

For mail forwarded thru sendmail, there's an easy way to see who
duplicated it. Look in all those obnoxious "Received" lines and see
which ones are the same in the different copies of the message, and which
are different. For example, in the following, it's clear that ucbarpa
only received the message once, (id AA06275 and time are the same in both),
but sun received it twice. That doesn't tell you who duplicated it, but you
know it happened after reception by ucbarpa's sendmail and before reception
by sun's -- it could have been duped by ucbarpa's sendmail, ucbarpa's uucp,
or sun's uucp/rmail.

Let's pool our information and fix this before it becomes epidemic.

Here's another one for you to practice on. Note that, especially in messages
from the Arpanet, the Received lines will not be in order and have to be
sorted by their times. Be sure to account for the time zones!
