#N:uicsg:7100002:000:877 uicsg!patel Jun 30 21:19:00 1984 HELP! DESPERATE! Need information, source code, hints, anything! Problem: One UNIX computer "vaxA" is a node on the CSNET. Our UNIX computer "vaxB" talks to A on a 9600 Baud line using UUCP. We have no problem in sending or receiving mail on the Unix-net. But the combination of Unix and CSNET addresses does not work. For example, sending mail from vaxB to Mr. John Doe. on a CSNET node XYZ. mail vaxA!johndoe%XYZ@CSNET-RELAY Neither does Mr. John Doe trying to send mail to me. mail vaxB!patel%vaxA@CSNET-RELAY So the question is what piece of software and/or (heaven forbid!) changes in the UNIX mail program on vaxA will do the trick? Top dollars for the right software. Respond to the net or to me. The author of this request didn't mention which version of Un*x and mail is in use, however: We run 4.2BSD and have the same situation. The sendmail.cf for system "vaxB" is the one for UUCP sites that comes in the can from Berkeley. The sendmail.cf for the UUCP+CSNET system "vaxA" needed some work. I changed it by (1) removing some Berkeley-specific stuff and (2) making it resolve UUCP addresses (alas, no pathalias yet), CSNET (~Internet) addresses, and SOME mixed addresses. The latter resolves the much-discussed ambiguity of a!b@c by interpreting it as (a!b)@c. Like all sendmail.cf files (:-)), there are sure to be some bugs in it, but it does handle local mail and the type of mixed address mentioned in the request. I will send a copy to anyone who asks (by mail), as long as they agree to advise me of any egregious bugs. If your CSNet neighbor has a UUCP channel at all (hopefully so), then try changing the address ``neigbor!machine!user'' to ``neighbor!user%machine.uucp'' (or if you send to them via ``@'', change ``machine!user@neighbor'' to ``user%machine.uucp@neighbor''). Any CSNet site that is also on the UUCP net should obtain the UUCP channel (from BRL and/or CSNet). -- In-Real-Life: Chris Torek, Univ of MD Comp Sci (301) 454-7690 UUCP: {seismo,allegra,brl-bmd}!umcp-cs!chris CSNet: chris@umcp-cs ARPA: chris@maryland
