[net.mail] Mailnet & Educom

schoff@cadtroy.UUCP (Martin Lee Schoffstall) (10/30/84)

Is anyone familiar with Mailnet & Educom?

My understanding is that this is a group of 475 colleges
and universities that transfer mail back and forth.

Does anyone care to volunteer information about this network,
are they using BITNET protocols, dialups, leased lines.

Are there any gateways between the usenet/arpanet/csnet & Mailnet?

thanks,

marty

MIT-MULTICS.ARPA has a link to Mailnet, or at least to UMich-MTS.Mailnet.

I do believe that EDUCOM has BITNET and Usenet connections.
I shall research this in the meantime....

You are confusing MAILNET with EDUNET. MAILNET
is a hub-oriented mail system used by about 21 institutions. The hub is
MIT-MULTICS. MAILNET relay software is available for a number of host
operating systems. MIT-MULTICS calls each participant (several times?) each
day to pick up and drop off messages.

Your confusion is understandable, since MAILNET is a communications project of
EDUCOM. There are 475 members of EDUNET, EDUCOM's system of selling unique and
surplus computer resources of about 18 supplier institutions (e.g., Cornell,
Wisconsin, MIT, Stanford, etc.) to many smaller institutions that cannot afford
the unique resource, or even a computer! Users at consumer institutions
reach the suppliers' hosts by Telenet. EDUCOM provides billing services and
information exchange to make this system work. EDUCOM also has a discount
program for hardward (such as modems and microcomputers) and software (such
as for networking and teleconferencing) in which member institutions may
participate. EDUCOM may be reached at
	person@EDCUOM (BITNET)
	person%EDUCOM.BITNET@WISCVM.ARPA
	...!psuvax1!person@educom.BITNET (UUCP)
where "person" is the staff person you want to reach. For general inquiries,
you might try Candy Willit (WILLIT@EDUCOM), though she might not be the
right person for specific programs.

Hookups are by dial-up or by packswitching. All the gateways are available,
but I don't know the address syntax for each. EDUCOM's newletter recently
published all the gateways with addressing syntax, host participating, etc.
Request a copy of the article from EDUCOM. MAILNET traffic to BITNET, also
sponsored by EDUCOM, goes through MITVMA.
