[net.mail] Progress report for Usenix UUCP Project

ksh@cbosgd.UUCP (Karen Summers-Horton) (03/14/85)

This is the progress report for the Usenix UUCP Project for February.
In January, the progress report was delivered at the Usenix conference
in Dallas, Texas. In that report, we announced our intention of merging
the Usenet Directory and the UUCP map, by adding an additional field
(#U) to the UUCP map. The posting of the Usenet Directory in March
will be the last one, and the merging of the two maps will begin soon.

We also intend to begin a regular, continuous posting of the UUCP map
to mod.map.uucp. The current idea is that one portion of the map
will be posted every 3 days, resulting in the entire map being posted
over the course of a month. This should not overload Usenet, and should
result in a more accurate map in the long run.

On March 13, I also will announce a public network of machines that will
make the map available via public access to these machines. So if for
some reason, you don't receive a certain portion of the map one month,
you can remedy the situation.

We have also had a very busy volunteer, Mark Brader, going through the map,
and filling in all the longitudes and latitudes. This is the latest step,
for people who wish to plot a geographical map of the UUCP network.

As usual, I welcome all comments and suggestions concerning this project.
