[net.mail] Mailing to a host given only an Internet #

kevin@harvard.ARPA (Kevin Crowston) (07/10/85)

Is there any way to mail to a host, given that you know
its Internet # (18.56.0.4), but not a name (that is, the
host isn't in the hosts.txt file, etc.)

I'm using Mail on a BSD 4.2 UNIX machine.

I think it's username@[18.56.0.4] . Of course, you can always telnet and
use SMTP manually (see the appropriate RFC) if all else fails.

Side note: The particular machine in question is on MIT's Project Athena
and should be addressed to username@MIT-ATHENA.ARPA (or .MIT.EDU)
