[net.mail] Domains... how to integrate with Pathalias?

jer@peora.UUCP (J. Eric Roskos) (09/09/85)

Now that we have (sort of) settled on an answer to the Domain debate, I'd
like to ask a related question.

Specifically, has anybody given any thought to how the nameservers for
domains should be represented in the UUCP map, particularly the pathalias
database?

Given the fact that there will probably always be some sites (at least for
a long while) that don't implement any new software, it would be best, it
seems, if the nameservers were reachable by use of the normal pathalias
software.

One way, at least, that you might do this would simply be to have an alias
(or the real name) for the nameserver site be the same as the name of the
subdomain. Thus, for example, if there was a domain "XYZ.UUCP", you could
have a site named (or aliased) "xyz" to which you could mail messages
intended for that domain to get the path further resolved. This would also
help keep domain tables more reasonable (if you use the domain-table
approach I'm currently using, at least), since if the nameserver site
changed you could make one change in the distributed UUCP map, rather than
having to have myriads of sites out there change their domain tables.

Comments?
