The /usr/group newsletter, reporting on the Portland USENIX BOF on BSD 4.3 (sorry for the staleness, but some of us don't make it to conferences and have to read all about it) noted that 4.3 includes MH, and I quote MH.5, a mail handler, provides network users with a more efficient way to read mail. This set of programs uses a number of UNIX utilities, and supplements the mail program used by 4.2. The 4.3BSD release will contain both MH.5 and mail. Sure 'nuff, there it is in /usr/new/mh/xxx. 'man mh' produces some mumbo-jumbo. The difference that's immediately apparent is that the MH commands are invoked at the UNIX command level, rather than within a mail subsystem. Two questions: 1) In what ways is MH better or worse than /ucb/mail? Does it, for example, directly support new standards in internet messages? X.400? etc. 2) At one point, I thought a MH source was available, unlicensed. Is one available for use by systems for upgrading of archaic mailers (/bin/mail) or non-UNIX systems? (VMeSs...)
