[net.mail] sendmail: uux can handle multiple recipients

z@rocksvax.UUCP (Jim Ziobro) (10/10/85)

The transport mechanism for uucp "uux" can handle multiple recipients but
most distributed sendmail.cf files don't allow for it. It is simply a matter
of adding an "m" to the mailer flags. Thus:

Muucp,	P=/usr/bin/uux, F=smDFMhuU, S=13, R=23, M=100000,
	A=uux - -r $h!rmail ($u)

Am I missing something obvious? Reply to me and I will summarize. This
could save a large amounts for distribution lists.

I have gotten several replies and most agree that it can be done *except*:

1.) 4.[01]BSD and many Xenix rmails only allowed one recipient (fixed
in 4.2 and many 4.1 systems)

2.) There is a 1024 byte command length limit for a 4.2 uux command. Probably
smaller on other machines. In 4.2 it is BUFSIZ.

Several people have already setup their sendmail configurations to do this
and are happy. It turns out there is a parameter in the source MAXLINE
which limits the length of line produced to the mailer. As distributed with
4.2 this parameter is set to 256. I would say that is a very safe number.

In summary it is safe to allow multiple uucp recipients after checking
with your neighbors for brain-damaged rmails.

Thanks to all who replied.
