So what's the story with ATT Mail? Is it available on any Unix machine other than 3B2's? I'm interested in having it on our Pyramid 90x. Do people like it? Is it usefull? How does it compare to MCI Mail or Compuserve and such? We are considering using it to consolidate our telex traffic as well as a mechanism to support our reps and sales people in the field. It also looks like it has a better user i/f for normal humans than the traditional Unix mailers. By the way. Why does it seem that when ever I talk to ATT sales/support people, they seem to have know idea what's going on? I've been trying to find out if the ATT Mail PMX software is available on general Unix machines and have gotten a tremendous run-around. Bob Berger Datacube Inc. 4 Dearborn Rd. I looked to see if the AT&T PMX software was available for anything other than the 3B series, and finally was able to get a tentative "no" from the customer support staff at AT&T Mail. Of course, the AT&T Mail service doesn't depend on this software. -- Steve Dyer dyer@harvard.HARVARD.EDU {linus,wanginst,bbnccv,harvard,ima,ihnp4}!spdcc!dyer

Thought I would synopsize the responses I got to my request for info on AT&T Mail and PMX. Mail is an email service that allows people to send and recive mail for a charge. You don't need unix to use it, packages (ACCESS) are available for various PC's including IBM clones and Mac's. You can even get your mail by calling on the phone and having a synthetic voice read it to you. If you have a dumb terminal, you can log into a central system. If you do have unix, you can access ATT MAIL via uucp. PMX is a package that has a uniform user interface. These are the packages effectivly allow you to have a mail server internally. This mail server then communicates to the ATT Mail system. PMX is currently only available on ATT 3B family computers though it sounds like it may be made available on other machines thru their manufactures or 3rd parties. PMX is kind of pricy (from my point of view). ATT Mail is not to bad 80 cents for 7500 characters. You can use it as a gateway to Telex for 70 cents per telex minute. I like that we can use our existing unix utilities (mail, editors, uucp) with it. We can get our sales reps and field people to get the Access software for their PC's and stay in touch via email. We can do all our telex from our unix systems as well. People have said they had a few glitches getting mail up if they had 4.?BSD but they weren't bad. Also there was some minor glitches in how telex numbers were set up. ATT domestic telex addresses have two extra digits, apparently to differentiate the carrier. Other people complained about the lack of knowledgeable people who answer the phones at ATT. I finally got a call from a person in the know. I presume he was prodded to call by my original posting. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. Bob Berger Datacube Inc. 4 Dearborn Rd. Peabody, Ma 01960 617-535-6644 ihnp4!datacube!berger {seismo,cbosgd,cuae2,mit-eddie}!mirror!datacube!berger
