davids@iscuva.UUCP (David Schmidt) (09/16/86)
I am the system administrator for 6 MicroVAX II's at the company I
work for. We are running Ultrix 1.2 and I am currently using Sendmail
and the UUMAIL programs. We also have an 11/785 running VMS and
a number of small Xenix machines.
All of the VAXen are on one ethernet. We are using DECNET to talk
to the VMS system and DECNET or TCP/IP between the MVII's.
We currently connect to Usenet via one machine (iscuva) which polls
Reed College in Portland.
I have a few questions on setting up mail and domains.
1. When should you consider setting up a local domain? Currently all
of our VAXen have unique names (all start with "isc") but we also
have some small Xenix systems which may duplicate someone elses name.
2. If we decide to set up a local domain (probably .ISC), what should
our complete site name be? iscuva.ISC.COM.UUCP? Is the order
important? The .COM refers to "comercial" as opposed to
"educational" or "government" sites, right?
3. What is the best way to implement a local domain?
4. How do we properly notify others of our domain?
5. What mailer offers the most compatability with the current standards
and our local configuration. (with DECNET, TCP/IP and UUCP).
6. How do you set the systems up so only one system appears to the rest
of the network? (I think this is not necessary with the domain but
it is nicer).
I have seen a lot of discussion on domains but I haven't seen a "primer"
on how a site should integrate (especially via UUCP/Usenet).
Wanting to standardize,
