[net.mail] Sendmail vs. MMDF-II?

wales@LOCUS.UCLA.EDU (09/17/86)

I would like to hear from anyone who can make an informed recommendation
of either Berkeley's Sendmail or CSNET's MMDF-II for a 4.2BSD or 4.3BSD
system, based on a careful study and comparison of both systems.

We in the UCLA Computer Science Department are considering bringing up
a dedicated "mail server" machine to help handle our rapidly expanding
user community. Our users are spread out over many different machines,
most of which run either LOCUS (a distributed network system based on
4.1BSD, with 4.2BSD network code), 4.2BSD, or 4.3BSD. Most of the sys-
tems are connected via Ethernets and gateways, but some are (and, for
various economic reasons, may continue to be for some time) hooked up
via UUCP links. We also have two ARPANET connections.

I have heard both good and bad about both Sendmail and MMDF-II. I am
quite aware that each system has both those who swear *by* it and those
who swear *at* it. I have heard more than enough of said propaganda and
really don't want to be inundated with any more.

What I would really like to do is hear comments from people who have
studied *both* Sendmail and MMDF-II; feel they understand the strong and
weak points of both systems; and can back up their preference of which-
ever system with facts and sound reasoning.

Please, if at all possible, mail your comments directly to me, via one
of the addresses below.
