[net.news.config] utcsstat still down

geoff@utzoo.UUCP (Geoffrey Collyer) (09/18/83)

Just when it looked like utcsstat's memory problems were almost over,
the CPU seems to have died at about 0430 Sept. 18th.

UTCS management has stiffed us with a 16-hours-per-day, 5-days-per-week
repair contract, so utcsstat will likely be down until sometime Monday
at the earliest.

This cheesey contract means that if hardware fails early Friday evening,
utcsstat can be down for 64 hours before DEC even arrives,
typically without the right parts, tools or diagnostics.
Boy, am I tired of broken hardware...

padpowell@wateng.UUCP (PAD Powell[Admin]) (09/19/83)

Geoff, all hardware breaks down:
1. at 5:30, just as the system manager is going home.
2. When the local DEC maintenance guy has to go to Deep River on a
	24HR super service contract
3. The last day the contract was valid.
4. The day after the warranty period.

So far we have had all of these happen.

All hardware may break, but ours is ALWAYS BROKEN. We are shooting for
a new record this month, maybe we will be down 3X as much as we are up!
We are educating the entire Toronto division of DEC field service, and
some out of town experts as well. Maybe I should write a book --
Murphy's Laws as apllied to utcsstat -- or 10,000 ways in which
a machine can die.
