AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey will be cutting over to a new ESSX system over Thanksgiving weekend. The phone lines will go down sometime Wed, Nov 23, and will be back up Mon, Nov 28. When the phones come back up, all the phone numbers will be changed. This change affects all Bell Labs locations in Murray Hill, Holmdel, and Whippany. (Since these are the three major New Jersey labs, this means almost everybody in New Jersey. The out-of-state labs, e.g. Indian Hill, Columbus, etc, are not affected.) I urge anyone with a UUCP connection to one of these machines to contact the system administrator on that machine ahead of time and get the new phone number. If you have a news connection to one of these machines, it's especially important to get the new phone number ahead of time. If you are an internal BTL site, subscribing to Network Action Central, you'll get the new numbers automatically in the December distribution. Disclaimer: I did not decide to do this, so don't yell at me. I also do not have a list of machines or new numbers, so don't contact me to get the new numbers. Deal with the SA directly. If you don't know who the SA on the machine is, I don't know what to tell you, try root or usenet or Postmaster or something. If you have problems relating to this that are of network-wide interest, this newsgroup is the proper place. By the way, I believe that not only will the data phone numbers change, but the voice numbers will change too. So be sure to call your contacts BEFORE next Wednesday, since you won't be able to afterwards.

Voice numbers are *not* changing; only the data numbers will be affected. --Steve Bellovin

This note supports Mark Horton's suggestions on the upcoming changes at Bell Labs sites -- Holmdel, Murray Hill, and Whippany, NJ. A new ESSX system for data services will be cut over the Thanksgiving weekend (1800 Nov. 23 through 0800 Nov. 28). The phone numbers will be changing, and this will affect uucp communications for news and mail. Administrators of uucp connections that will be affected are encouraged to contact their counterparts to ensure the continued operation of the uucp links after the ESSX cut. As a last resort, administrator information can be obtained by sending mail to ihnp4!action, but please check the net.news.map entries first. On a trial basis, ihnp4 now offers mail to Bell Labs employees on a name basis (i.e. ihnp4!mark.r.horton sends mail to cbosgd!mark). Gary Murakami Bell Labs - IH ihnp4!gjm

In order to prevent a flood of inquiries, why not post a list of the phone # differences so that people who have the existing numbers can change them. ie. if your number was 123-3457 and it becomes 323-7777, then the difference would be +200-4320 and it could be negative as well. Could somebody at BTL-NJ get the new numbers and post this? I assume it would not be a security leak. -- Brad Templeton - Waterloo, Ont. (519) 886-7304
