In the interest of avoiding confusion, and in light of recent controversy (re: vortex?), I thought I would ask this. A sister division of our's, Raytheon Data Systems in Norwood, Mass, is soon going to be tying into Usenet. The main site is to be a System 5 VAX11/780 called "snowhite" (sic), accompanied by 10 Convergent Technologies MegaFrames, named after the 7 dwarves, with "larry", "moe" and "curly" added in. (These are the same people that 6 months ago had PDP11/70's tied in called "hawkeye", "trapper", "klinger", and a PDP11/34 called "radar". Don't look at me, it's not my idea....) While I'm at it, there are 2 other divisions with more conservative sounding (and less creative?) site names, like our's, that are in differing stages of hooking into Usenet. Raytheon Missile Systems Division in Bedford, Ma. - raybed2, and Raytheon Equipment Division in Sudbury, Ma. - raysud2. Anyway, I checked in the monthly map data and found nothing, but there are quite a few undocumented UUCP sites out there. -- Ralph Shaw, {allegra, decvax!brunix, ccieng5}!rayssd!ras Raytheon Co, Submarine Signal Div., Portsmouth, RI

I made this offer before, and I'll make it again -- if anyone cares to send me any proposed site names, I'll check it against my database of current site names. I cannot claim that my list is exhaustive, but it contains *at least* all of the site names in the newsmaps, kolstad's list, the ihnp4 list, allegra's pathalias list, and some other lists I've collected. This list includes a number of "secure" sites which are on the net but don't wish their names advertised -- like being included in the maps. Also, if anyone out there has any connection information that they would be willing to share, please pass it along. And if anyone is interested in establishing a connection with GaTech, please send me mail. We now return you to your newsgroup, already in progress. -- Off the Wall of Gene Spafford The Clouds Project, School of ICS, Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332 CSNet: Spaf @ GATech ARPA: Spaf.GATech @ CSNet-Relay uucp: ...!{akgua,allegra,rlgvax,sb1,unmvax,ulysses,ut-sally}!gatech!spaf

<for the line-gobbler...> Well, according to the latest specs, wbux5 is supposed to move from West Long Branch (wbux5), to Navesink River something-or-other (I think it is Research Center or something along that line) in May of 1984. Since we can no longer use the call letters "wb", we need another name for our computers. We presently have a VAX-11/780 and a VAX-11/750...(the 750 is not yet connected to the outside world and is called "wbnps"). Any suggestions for new names? -- Laurie Topor [ihnp4, houxf, mhuxt]!wbux5!lat CSO \ 185 Monmouth Parkway \ West Long Branch, NJ 07733 \ (203)-870-7491

Again, one of the main reasons that the domain-izing of uucpland is being discussed in net.mail and in Mark Horton's uucp project is that unique names are NOT required universally, only within a domain. (So every organization with a bunch of locally named things becomes a domain.) No, sorry, that's not true. Even though we may not require unique names in the domain name, the underlying transport mechanism (UUCP) still must have unique names. We plan a name registry as part of the map project. Mark
