Well, a decision has been reached. In the anticipation of other vaxen (please, Mr. Dec?) we have decided to change the uucp name of 'psuvax' to 'psuvax1' at the same time we convert to 4.2. In addition to this message I will be sending mail to each of the sites we connect to -- who will hopefully put a line for BOTH psuvax1 and psuvax in their L.sys files. Thank you, the new site info looks like this: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =Name: psuvax1 (OR psuvax) =Machine Type/OS: VAX 11/780, 4.2BSD =Organization: Pennsylvania State University, Computer Science Dept. =Contact Person: John Irwin =Electronic-Addr: {akgua,burdvax,ihnp4,allegra,princeton,purdue,cbosgd}!psuvax!jdi =Phone: (814) 865-1802 =Postal-Address: 529 E. Prospect Ave, State College, PA 16801 =Long/Lat Coors: =Comments: This site is changing names (slowly) from psuvax to psuvax1 =Comments: in anticipation of a psuvax2-3... Thus EITHER psuvax1 or =Comments: psuvax SHOULD work on UUCP, but 'psuvax1' is the correct one. =Comments: This change should take place in mid-June, 1984. =Editor: John Irwin, June 3 1984 = ================================================== # psuvax1 allegra(C), akgua(B), ihnp4(C), burdvax(C), purdue(C), cbosgd(C), cornell(C), psupdp1(B) BITNET(psuvax1) bozo@psuvax1.bitnet CSNET(penn-state) bozo@penn-state.csnet -- Spoken: John D. <...> Why keep people using their hardware flavour in their sitenames instead of showing up with something original? In this way you effectively limit the choice of a unique sitename to only 3 or so characters! P.S. Don't flame because of "mcvax". That too will change somewhere in the future. Locally the site is already known as "boring" (!). -- Piet Beertema, CWI, Amsterdam ...{decvax,philabs}!mcvax!piet

With some (System V?) sites running a uucp which doesn't distinguish site names after the first 6 chars, I would caution against "psuvax1" as being totally distinguishable from "psuvax2". Dave Sherman Toronto -- {allegra,cornell,decvax,ihnp4,linus,utzoo}!utcsrgv!dave
