gjm@ihnp4.UUCP (Gary J. Murakami) (11/20/84)
ihnp4 appears to be stable enough that I can now announce that it is "back up and crawling (i.e. not running fast)." The load when it first came up was so heavy that even 4 simultaneous uuxqt's were a bottleneck. The number of simultaneous uucico's ranged around 7. There is still a heavy backlog, but things are clearing up a bit. ihnp4 had power problems that eventually killed the system last Monday. The problem was eventually resolved on Friday by the replacement of the power cabinet. The power cabinet is in the middle of the unit with the tape drive and CPU/DMA cabinet(s) on one side and the I/O processor cabinet on the other. After they removed the faulty power cabinet, I stepped into the empty space to see how it felt to be the "soul of a dead machine." Sad to say, ihnp4 was still powerless to do anything ;-) . Anyway, I appologize for the inconvenience of delayed mail and news (only a very small amount appears to be lost due to lack of sufficient disk space) and hope that you will bear with us patiently over the next few days as we attempt to get service back to "normal." -Gary
