[net.news.config] Major name changes at Reading University, UK

adrian@cs.reading.UUCP (Adrian Pell) (03/30/85)

With effect 1700 GMT, Friday 29th March 1985, naming of machines at
Reading University has changed - dramatically.

The salient points that are necessary to know are as follows:

1)	The name of the gateway into the site has changed. Formerly,
there were two gateways, called ru-cs44 and ru-cc44. These
have now become one gateway, called reading.

2)	Sites connected to Reading should see no difference, other
than the name change, i.e. through-routing to ukc, cybavax,
iclbra and brueer only sees one site, called reading, on the
path thus a suitable path from mcvax to brueer would be:

		ukc!reading!brueer!user

3)	Internal sites are now addressable behind reading in domain
	form as follows:

	reading!cs.reading!user Computer Science Department
	reading!micro.reading!user	Microprocessor Lab
	reading!psych.reading!user	Psychology Department
reading!uts.am.reading!user	Computer Centre (UTS on Amdahl V7)
reading!cms.am.reading!user	Computer Centre (CMS on Amdahl V7)

In keeping with the draft uucp transmission standard (January
	1985), the form:

		reading!cs.reading.uucp!user

	is also acceptable.

4)	It *should* be possible, for those with domain routers to
address us in internet syntax, i.e.

		user@cs.reading.uucp

(There is some doubt in my mind as to whether this works from
all, or even any, sides of Reading).

5)	A limited full name service will be available soon enabling
most people to ignore the structure of machines internal to
this site. This will be expanded as and when time permits.
	(See signature!)

Backwards compatibility
-----------------------

In an attempt to alleviate the transitional problems, ukc
(University of Kent at Canterbury) are aliasing all mail directed
at ru-cs44, and routing it along the new address. We, in
turn, will handle correctly mail directed at ru-cc44 (micro)
	and ru-ps44 (psych) internally.

Associated with all this, we just changed to 2.10.2 news too. All
seems ok at the moment. I'd be grateful if neighbours would let me
know of any problems caused by the changes.
