cbosgd is apparently having a lot of trouble dialing out to other systems. I don't know what the cause is, but the symptom is that we can dial OK, but when we send a message (e.g. the login name or password to log in as uucp) all but the first character are garbled. I can put a \d between every character (and at the end) in the chat script, but that doesn't help the subsequent connection. Other systems seem to be able to phone us OK, but sometimes the line gets hung up in the middle of the call. I don't know what the cause is, but I do know that our telephone central office was recently upgraded from a #5 Crossbar to a #5 ESS. I'd be quick to blame the upgrade, but cbdkc1 is on the same CO and seems to be having no trouble. I might guess that our modems are broken, but at least three separate modems (two Penrils and an AT&T 2224) are having the same problem. If you haven't heard from cbosgd recently, try polling us, there may be mail backed up waiting for your system. If you have any ideas, they would be most welcome. We can still be reliably reached through non-modem routes, such as ihnp4 or cbdkc1 or ulysses. Mark
