The paths from 7018 articles (with crosspostings counted only once) from epimass were collected; these articles arrived between May 17 and May 30. This map shows all connections that appear in 35 or more paths (0.5%). epimass exchanges full feeds with pesnta and csi, and receives articles posted within two hops of oliveb (all local calls -- it's nice to be in a high density net zone). Leaf sites that posted 35 articles made the map (hello "brahms", with 90), as did every American backbone site but drillsys and cuae2 (31 paths contained sdcsvax!drillsys -- not quite enough). The ")" character is used for paths that cross but do not connect; lines parallel to sitenames, like | host / |host or ---------- or /host | / are not connections. While this map shows who is responsible for getting the news to me, in practice, for sites that are far away from you, it has a lot to do with how the news gets to you. I have a set of tools that makes it easy to gather paths and do various things to them; let me know if there is any interest. While I had an automatically generated list of connections to work from, I had to draw the map by hand (well, Emacs). +-----------------------------------------\ ll-xn husc6---------------------)-------------------------------+ \ | / --------------------)-----------------------------\ | | | panda / mhuxi-mhuxf sftig | pur-ee---uiucdcs aplcen \| smoke | | | / | | | | | / | || | | | genrad think mhuhk mhuxm whuxl inuxc jhunix umcp-cs || brl-smoke | | | | | | | | / | || | | | mit-eddie mhuxnr-)--mhuxn----)--ihnp4 gymble | /----))-brl-adm | | / || | | | | | / || || | mit-amt|| utcsri | | | | |columbia / || || | || | | | | | || / || || | trillian| utzoo | mhuxt------houxm ||styx-\| astroatc|| || whuxlm | | | | || | || | || || | alice | watmath-)-watnot mtuxo ||nike || uwvax || || akgua | | | | || | || | || || | +---)--)----)----)---orsvax1-----pyrnj || | -))----)----))-- || bu-cs | | | | | | \ | \ |/ || | || \ || / | | allegra---)-ulysses-bellcore inmet \-)-caip-))-topaz---))-harvard--rclex | | | | | | | | | | / |\ || | || | \ | | | cbosgd | | | petrus | ima +-)- | -))-)---\ || | | gitpyr| | | | / | | | | / | | | || | \ || / | | | | | clyde--burl | | wang| / dartvax| | | || | /---seismo-------)--gatech | | / / \ |/ / | | | || |/ / |\ \ | | | epsilon--gamma / decvax amdcad-(-(---lll-crg sally | \ \-----)--mcvax | | | / /| | | | | | | | \ | |\ | | | | | | zeta------sabre / | | | | amd | | | mordor | -)-)-ut-ngp | /-ukc | | | | /)-)-)-)----+ | | | | \ || | princeton-------------)--)- | | | | | lll-lcc utastro | \ || dcl-cs | | | | +-)-)---\ | | | | | | \ +--)-----------------/ /-/ | | | | qantel vecpyr rochester| | warwick | | | | / | | | | | | | | | | sun--)--decwrl--)- \----)-\ rocksanne | | | | | | | | | | \ | \ | | | \ | | puvax2 ernie | | | / glacier | \ | ritcv | \ | | | | | / \ | | | | | | | \ | | pucc ucdavis | | | | | |kestrel| | sunybcs | \ | | \| | | | | | | \ | | \ | | trwrb brahms-----ucbvax--)---)-)--+ | isis \ kitty / \ | | | / \ | | | | / | \ | | | | | ucla-cs / amdahl cad| | | | / nbires | bat. | fluke | | | | | / / | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ism780c | nsc----pyramid-)-)- | | hao | bullwinkle | | | | \ | / | | / | | | | \| | / | | | | | | sdcrdcf-\ / | amiga | pesnta-)-hplabs----tektronix--uw-beaver cmcl2--cds2 | | ||\ \ | | | | | | /| | | | | \\ | | |psivax || \ \-)--)-------)-)--)---)- | hp-sdd | | reed \\-tekgen | | | / | \ | | / | | | | | | \ \ | | |burdvax | \ | csi /- | phri-)--)--)-\ orca teklds tekig5 | | | | | | | \ | | | | | \ | | |psuvax1 | sdcsvax -)--epimass-oliveb | ------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | psuvm | sdcc6 | gould9------------ncr-sd--ncrcae--ncsu--mcnc--philabs | | | \ | | | oberon sdcc3 ---------------------+ | +--------------------------------------------------------------+ Abbreviations: bat. = batcomputer, wang = wanginst, trillian = mit-trillian, sally = ut-sally, oberon = usc-oberon, pucc = pucc.bitnet, psuvm = psuvm.bitnet, ernie = ernie.berkeley.edu -- - Joe Buck {ihnp4!pesnta,oliveb,csi}!epimass!jbuck Entropic Processing, Inc., Cupertino, California Better living through entropy!
