On Sunday August 3, 1986, one of ucbvax's fujitsu eagles decided that it had nothing further to live for, and crashed. Unfortunately for us, it took all the data we had entrusted to it, with it into oblivion... This included a rather well known partition around these parts called `/usr/spool/news' which, due to some other local configuration constraints, also held the netnews library (i.e. the history, active, and sys files, and miscellaneous binaries and scripts). Since the spool partitions on ucbvax are not backed up (every try to snap a shot of an object moving faster the fastest shutter speed on your camera?), I've been recreating the netnews configuration from the sources that were stored elsewhere, and from memory. For those of you reading netnews locally, I have no idea how the sudden reset of sequence numbers will affect rrn. Watch out for that. For those of you in more remote locations, be on notice that the gateway for several netnews groups will be somewhat broken for a while. Should be fixed by the end of the week.
