There must be another torch song freak on this net... Does anybody know who (besides Julie London) sang the song "Black Coffee"? Does anybody know of any place I can get copies of cuts of this song? I thought that Sarah Vaughn sang it, but have never been able to find it on one of her records. -- liz sommers uucp: ...{harvard, seismo, ut-sally, sri-iu, ihnp4!packard}!topaz!sommers arpa: sommers@rutgers

I think Bobby Darin (of Splish Splash and Mack the Knife fame) recorded it on an album (circa 1960) when he was being transformed from a rock and roller to a straight singer. I don't recal the name of the lp, but it had a silver cover; I suspect the album is long out of print. Bill Hery

The Pointer Sisters also sang it: I have them doing Black Coffee on "The Best of..." album. Also worth checking out is two INTSTRUMENTAL versions of this song. One by Phineas Newborn on (I think) Please Send Me Someone to Love, and most especially the very soulful version by Ray Charles, on "The Great Ray Charles" on Atlantic. It's not quite a torch song, but my nomination for best vocal would be Johnny Hartman doing "Lush Life". Charlie Berg {decvax, linus}!wanginst!ucadmus!telesis!chb
