Just as "i.e." stands for "id est"= that is
e.g. stands for "exemplia gratia"(not sure about spelling)= a pleasing example

Pleasing? I do not think so.

Yes, [gratus] denotes pleasing, as in "gratitude", but I think that
that [gratia] denotes free, as in "gratis".

	e.g. = [ exempli gratia ] .
