[net.lang] BASIC In Pascal / Re: Teaching students with GOTO

phipps@fortune.UUCP (Clay Phipps) (05/24/84)

I recall seeing an article in *BYTE* about a year or so ago;
it was called "A Maze-Building Program In Pascal".
The program was a blatant literal conversion of a BASIC or FORTRAN
program. Almost all of the control flow was by "if" ... "goto".
There was heavy use of labels, and they had names like "L3310".
The identifiers were most likely one-character long,
and the program probably devoid of procedures or functions,
because I clearly remember being convinced that the alleged Pascal program
was derived from BASIC rather than FORTRAN.
There was no credit in the article to the author of any predecessor program,
so I don't know whether the author of the article just ripped off
someone else's BASIC program, or whether his mind was actually that twisted.

The program (and perhaps the accompanying article)
was a tremendous disservice to those who were curious about Pascal
and how it can be used to improve the programming process.
Sad to admit, I never got around to writing the well-deserved flame to *BYTE*.
