At the risk of causing them a flood of mail that they cannot handle, I'd like to recommend a source for a Modula-2 compiler for VAX-11/bsd 4.1. The last time we spoke, the terms were a licence fee of 100 pounds (payable in sterling) for a copy of the distribution tape (I believe that this is imposed by N. Wirth, rather than Cambridge). The distribution system includes a *MUCH* improved I/O library and an implementation of GKS draft 7.0. Be aware that the code produced is far from optimal, but that it does seem to work, and there are people at Cambridge using it for extensive development and research. The person to get in touch with is Mick Jordan University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory Corn Exchange Street Cambridge CB2 3QG England Tel: +44 223 352435 You might try sending him mail at 'mjj%camjenny%caga%ucl-cs@Isid.arpa', but things have been a little unreliable of late (besides, CSNET seems to have hiccups over the '%' signs). Mick is also busy writing a version for the PERQ running UNIX, has a well optimised one for the GEC-4090, and has a prototype version for the 68000, although that is a little shaky. john wilkes wilkes@hp-labs (csnet) hplabs!wilkes (uucp) wilkes.hp-labs@rand-relay (arpa)

I am considering using modula-2 on IBM PC. Following companies market
modula-2 development packages (compiler,linker,editor,debugger,utility
modules,...) :
Logitech 415/365-9852
volition 619/481-2286
interface technologies 713/523-8422
modula corp 800-545-4842
I would like to know what do these packages really offer, and your
experience and opinions about the one's you have used.
Please consider the following points :
conformity to wirth's book
concurrency/coroutines - (yes/no, how)
restrictions on code/data size
overlay facility
ROMability
8087 support
debugger
utility module/library (what do they contain -
graphic/screen io, file io etc
system interface, linkage to assembler code...)
manual - how good is it?
protected/nonprotected/source availability
price
Are there any other commericial/public domain modula packages?
(any rumors from borland?)
responses => automatic summary posting.
Thanks in advance.
- vish.
