[net.rec.coins] Olympic Gold Coins

rkj (03/24/83)

I'd like to get the opinion of netland coin collectors
on the potential numismatic value of the US Olympic
Gold coins. The last price I saw for the gold coin +
2 silver coin set was $410. Since the silver coins can be
purchased separately for $29, that puts the gold coin at
$352. The gold content is .538 oz, so the coin's gold is
valued at about $650/oz.

Since the gold in these coins is greatly overpriced at
today's gold prices ($410-420), the only motivation for
buying these coins is either for numismatic appreciation
or simple beauty. I'm told there will be about 10 million
minted. Isn't this a rather high number? If so, these
coins will be rather common, thus becoming more of a bullion
rather than a numismatic item.

My questions for the knowledgable coin investors on the net are:
1. What kind of track record do commemorative coins (US) show?
2. Given the projected mintage for the Olympic coins and the dismal
sales of the gold commemorative medallions, what is the numismatic
potential for these Olympic coins?
3. If gold stays around today's levels for the next 6 months or
so, would it be better to pick up these coins on the secondary
market, and what price could be expected?
