I just received a newsletter from the TI International Users Group
(not officially a part of TI) with their reactions from the recent
Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. If you want specific quotes,
please just ask. Otherwise, the gist is: TI is late on essentially
everything they promised (99/8, HEXBUS peripherals, games) except
their conversion to a 99/4A which checks game ROM's for TI's patented
self-incrementing feature. In addition, TI has 4 games in the works,
but "we at the User's-Group were less than impressed."
The good news is that at least 4 companies (FUNWARE, ROMOX, Thorn EMI,
and ATARI (!!!)) are ignoring TI's attempt to smother software for
the TI and are busily releasing ROM's which they GUARANTEE will work
with any TI 99/4A. Such games as DIG DUG, PACMAN, Defender, Donkey Kong,
River Rescue, etc. are due to be released in August with more to come.
Personal comment: 1) It looks like owning a TI 99/4A may not be as
big a mistake as I thought I had made. 2) The TI computer may wind
up being a big market, but it's questionable whether TI will be a
part of it. I think TI may be getting what it deserves.
