[net.invest] "How to Buy Stocks -- Summary"

joepwro@ihopa.UUCP (Joe Wroblewski) (02/09/84)

Following is a list of books recommended to me by various people.
I'm including all information I received, so if something like the
author's name doesn't appear then it wasn't supplied.

The most recommended book was "How to Buy Stocks" by Louis
Engel et al. It comes in paper back -- I bought it for
about $3.50 at my local book store. There are several editions
	    so get the latest one!

	2. Another -- "Technical Analysis of stock Trends" by Frank
	    Edwards and John Magee.

	3. Another -- "John Magee's General Semantics of Wall Street"

	4. Another -- "How Charts can help you in the stock Market" by
	    William Jiller.

	5. Two more -- "Human Action" and "Theory of Money and Credit" byu
y
Ludwig Von Mises.

	6. Another -- "Walk Down Wall Street" by Unknown.

	7. Finally -- :""Inflation Beaters Investment Guide" by Burton
	    Malkiel.

One person recommended that I consult with a Broker. But I wanted
to understand how the stock market works not how to lose lots of money
in it. Sorry E. F.

I think that last book is "A Random Walk Down Wall Street", by Burton
Malkiel. It is an effective presentation of the efficient market
hypothesis, which holds (among other things) that technical analysis
and chartism is useless in predicting the future direction of stock
prices. It is highly recommended, even if you don't buy all of its
arguments.

Another *excellent* book, which has saved me from making a number of
mistakes as well as helping the overall picture, is

"The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need", by Andrew
Tobias. He says that the title is what it is,
because all those other investment guides, you
don't need. Witty, informative, common sense.
