Can someone tell me how I figure capital loss or gains from the sale of "new" AT&T shares? I have purchased stock over the past few years at various prices. Now that the Bell Operating Companies have split off from AT&T there was, in effect, a stock split with share holders receiving stock in each of the new companies. We kept our AT&T certificates but they are now worth considerable less. If I sell some, how do I know how to figure my gain or loss? Thanks Dennis Vogel, AT&T Information Systems Laboratories

#R:eisx:-70700:haddock:11900004:000:394 haddock!johnl Mar 23 15:53:00 1984 When AT&T split up, certain percentages of the old AT&T were assigned to each of the RBOCs and to the new AT&T. If you're selling new AT&T, your cost is your cost per share that you paid, times the percentage assigned to new AT&T. The percentages were in the papers a week or two ago, and AT&T is supposed to be sending shareholders a pamphlet explaining all of this. John Levine, ima!johnl
