Is there anyone else in netland who plays in the NNHL (National Novice Hockey
League)? For the uninitiated, the NNHL is a league of players over 22
years of age who have never played hockey before or have had limited experience.
There's even place for people who have never skated before! The league is a
non-checking, non-slapshot league, and is a lot of fun, with a good
deal of instruction during the player's first season. Currently, there are
leagues in the Baltimore-Washington, Los Angeles-Orange County, and San
Francisco Bay areas, but next year it is hoped that there will be new leagues
started in Denver, St. Louis, and Phoenix. I'd like to hear the impressions
of anybody who's played in one of these leagues. If anybody
out there is interested in the NNHL, send me mail and I'd be glad to send
you the address of the national headquarters or the San Francisco office.

I have been playing in the NNHL here in LA since the league started about
a year and a half ago. I used to play on the neighborhood pond after
getting home from high school, then played once a week at midnight
with some other hackers in college (Cleveland). When I moved to LA I
despaired of ever finding a group of people even close to
being as bad as me. When I heard that NNHL was teaching people to skate
as well as play hockey, I brushed 6 years worth of dust off my equipment,
bought the rest of the equipment I needed, and joined right up. Since
I already knew how to skate and fake playing hockey, I skipped the
eight weeks of instruction.

The first game I went to was a real trip -- talk about falling bodies!
Well, almost everyone (including me) has improved immensely, and every
once in a while, it even looks almost like real hockey. I'm on the
South Bay Leafs and enjoy playing even though we have a terrible record
this year. One gripe: I figure we each pay about $10/game. Since about
30 people pay for each game and ice costs $75/hour, I think we are paying
too much. However, I recommend it to anyone who isn't a great hockey
player but enjoys playing and can spend about $500 a year for fees,
practice time (most teams practice weekly), and skate sharpening.
