[net.sport.hockey] Announcers

I have to reply to the article discussing who is the best hockey
announcer. Anyone who has heard Lloyd Pettit announce the Blackhawk games
in the 60's and 70's knows that he has to be considered at the top of the
list of all-time best announcers. His non-stop talking style and vivid
descriptions of the action made routine games exciting and I loved that
little unique way he had of announcing a goal. Instead of saying, "He
scores!", He would say, "A shot and a goal" - not a big point but all great
announcers have a uniqueness by which they are known.
Unfortunately, the Blackhawks management didn't agree with Lloyd
when he said that fights were a part of hockey and that he was going to
call the fights like he saw them as well as the hockey action and he was
released. He was a very peaceful man, though, as was proven by something
he did in his next job, that as a coach at Milwaukee in another league.
His team was in the playoffs one year and the team Milwaukee was playing
had some goons on the team that, in Pettit's opinion (and most other ob-
servers) deliberately tried to hurt the Milwaukee players. What did Pettit
do? He pulled his players off the ice and forfeited, not the game, but the
series (if my memory serves me right). He was a real gentleman as well as
a great announcer. W e l l , I
