The National Novice Hockey League will be expanding to seven cities this year. In addition to the established leagues in Los Angeles-Orange County, DC-Baltimore, and the SF Bay Area, new leagues are being opened in San Diego, St. Louis, Phoenix, and Denver. If you're interested, the numbers to call can be found in ads in the sports sections of local newspapers. In addition to these cities, the NNHL plans to expand to seven more cities for the 1984-85 season. These cities include Chicago, Portland, OR, Memphis, Charlotte, NC (the last three developed jointly with the Ice Capades Corporation, an owner of rinks), and three cities chosen from Kansas City, Boston, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Honolulu, Detroit, Salt Lake City, and others. For those of you who don't know about the NNHL, it's an instructional league for men and women who have never played hockey before. If you're a hockey fan who always wanted to play, it's a dream come true. They teach you the game (and even how to skate if you don't know how), organize teams, and run a full schedule of games. National playoffs are in the works (about five years down the line). The league was written up in Sports Illustrated earlier this year (in the Kentucky Derby issue), and probably will be placing regional advertising in a few issues of SI later this year. (This is not an advertisment, but just a message from a satisfied league member who thought other people should know about this.) Wayne Citrin (ucbvax!citrin) Berkeley Griffins NNHL-SF
